Jugalbandi (a form of duet) enables a very beautiful presentation of Raag music. Historically, Jugalbandi was sung by brothers and up until the mid-twentieth century only by men, but Astha-Pradeep are unique in the world of Dhrupad in that they are a male and female duo.
The fact that Astha-Pradeep are a male-female Jugalbandi allows an extraordinary versatility in sound. Collectively they exhibit a particularly wide vocal range, more than four octaves, and the balance between male and female voices affords a unique soothing quality.
